Overall, 2009 was a great year for Mafia Wars. And although we experienced some issues towards the end of the year, we were able to fix most of the bugs while prepping many of the exciting features that promises to make 2010 a banner year for Mafia Wars. Some of the features we have in store for you in the coming months:

New Years Job: We're heading into 2010 in exciting fashion with a featured job starting December 28th and running through January 4th. This featured job will give you even more options than before including choosing different missions with different payouts.

Release of new city - Bangkok: Originally slated to debut in December 2009, Bangkok will finally make its premiere in January 2010. We intentionally delayed Bangkok to fine-tune it for an improved game experience.

Multi-item gifting: We're making it easier for you to make your mafia stronger by providing multi-item gifting.

Translations: For our many international players, we will be adding translations of Mafia Wars in many different languages in addition to our current offering.

Robbing: We heard you loud and clear, we're bringing back robbing in a new and improved format.

In addition to features, we are also enhancing community outreach through various initiatives:

Developers Days: A series of intimate meetups between players and Mafia product team members where idea generation and candid conversations can take place.

Exclusive Betas: Preview, testing, and feedback of features by users before full release.

Facebook Mafia Wars Server Issues

We're fixing a whole lot of bugs to make Facebook Mafia Wars a whole better experience.

Issues Update: Earlier this morning we experienced intermittent page load problems that may have affected your game play (specifically, the ability t o see your entire Mafia). Zynga’s Network Operations team quickly responded and brought additional servers online to restore normal game play. We realize that this problem is one of many you may have had to endure over the last two weeks while we worked to upgrade our systems to speed up performance and stop botters and cheats. We are grateful for your patience and want to assure you that the entire team i s working through the weekend to address these issues and improve our processes.

Known Issues from Performance Upgrade: Recently, the Mafia Wars team launched two major efforts to improve your game play. First, we deployed iframe technology to dramatically speed up the game (and get rid of spinning revolvers!). Second, we launched a major offensive against botters, hackers and cheaters.

Unfortunately, with the good – a 10x improvement in load time for most players and the ability to detect and deter botters – there were some unintended consequences. Specifically, a small number of players have been unable to access the game, while others have experienced symptoms ranging from having their player names scrambled to a disruption of their stats.

We would like you to know that we have found a fix for those of you who are having trouble accessing the game or have scrambled stats. Our system is working through the affected accounts and we are confident that all of you will be back in the game very soon. Every day we will post an in-game message to those users who have had their accounts repaired on that day. We appreciate the patience and understanding you have shown us.

Good News! Profile links are back! We fixed the bug that was blocking players from fighting through the Profile page. We want to assure you that this was an unintended bug introduced while trying to improve the performance of the game. Everybody on the Mafia Wars team believes that clans and warring are an integral part of the Mafia Wars experience.

We also realize that there are a number of outstanding bugs in the game that we need to work on. Tomorrow we will post a list of them and the order in which we intend to prioritize them. Please feel free to let us know if you think we've missed anything or we should change the order.

Bug fix: We have fixed the bug where users who play on the same computer initially saw a Mafia Wars page of the previous logged in account when loading the game with a new one.

Game Updates - We made a few improvements to our fighting, robbing, and hitlists.

* Players can now only attack, rob or put a hit on players within a reasonable level range

* Players can not continually add the same person to the hitlist multiple times in a row

* Each hit put out will increase the minimum bounty for the next hit, within a short period of time.
The more you use the hitlist, the more expensive it will get.

* Now you can see how long until your next energy pack is available. A timer will be displayed on the home page.

MafiaWars Feature: Gifting

Collections can now be sent as gifts to your mafia members.

* Now you can trade collection items between your mafia members. Collections can be earned by trading between friends and completing jobs.

* When you collect 7 of the same item type you can vault the items to earn a unique bonus.

* The more you give the more you will receive.

* We are working on more ways to improve gifting. Keep checking back for new updates.

Game Updates - We have made a number of small changes to help improve the gameplay.

* We removed the current daily bonus in order to address game balance issues. We are currently working on a new bonus system, please stay tuned.

* We replaced the old mafia news section with the current news section in the hopes of improving usability.

* We corrected an issue that caused some browsers to crash when viewing the Top Families.

Facebook MafiaWars Robbing Update Fixed

By spending Stamina you can attack an enemy's property and steal money from the property. Robbing is harder than a fight, as you can only bring a number of Mafia members equal to your Level, even if you have more members in your Mafia.

When a property is protected (denoted by dark blue shields on the image) it has a higher Defense than normal. Each successful attack will remove one shield, damage the property, and reward you with money and experience. When a property is damaged too much it cannot be attacked further. The police arrive to break up the party.

This feature is still in BETA, and is unlocked at level 15.

Facebook MafiaWars Top Mafia Friend Benefits

Your assigned MafiaWars top mafia get benefits too!

Assign your best mafia members to positions within your mafia. Each position has a unique bonus which can be greater depending on who gets promoted to that position.

Mastermind – Choose a member with many jobs completed to promote to Mastermind to get more experience points from doing jobs. Your Mastermind gains a small chance of gaining 50% more experience when performing jobs.

Wheelman – Choose a member with the Fearless character type and a high level to promote to Wheelman to get a reduced energy cost for jobs. Your Wheelman gains a small chance to perform jobs for no energy.

Button Man – Choose a member with the Maniac character type and a high level to promote to Button Man to get an Attack bonus. Your Button Man gains a small chance to always win fights they initiate.

Bodyguard – Choose a member with many fights won to promote to Bodyguard to get a Defense bonus. Your Bodyguard gains a small chance to always win fights when they are attacked.

Safecracker – Choose a member with many successful heists to promote to Safecracker to get more money from fighting and robbing. Your Safecracker gains a small chance to gain double the money when fighting or robbing.

Bagman – Choose a member with the Mogul character type and a high level to promote to Bagman to get more money from jobs. Your Bagman gains a small chance to gain double the money when performing jobs.

Facebook Mafia Wars Job Mastery Special Items

As you've all noticed, Facebook MafiaWars has added Job Mastery levels to all Jobs.
You need to get to Tier 3 to be able to earn the "Master" tag on a certain job.
Here is the complete list of what items and benefits you get if you master a job in Facebook MafiaWars.

Street Thug (lvls 1 - 4)
If you master all of the level 3 “Street Thug” jobs,you earn the title of “Master Street Thug”.
Special Item: Pistol Bayonet - giving you +4% damage dealt in fights


Associate (lvls 5 - 8)
If you master all of the level 3 “Associate” jobs, you earn the title of “Master Associate”.
Special Item: Bugatti - giving you -7% damage received in fights


Soldier (lvls 9 - 12)
If you master all of the level 3 “Soldier” jobs,you earn the title of “Master Soldier”.
Special Item: Golden Skull - giving you a 30 second reduction on your health regen timer.

Facebook MafiaWars Server Down Announcement

The Mafia Wars development team is performing a planned server upgrade this evening between 10:00pm and 2am Pacific Time. During this upgrade the app will be offline and unavailable.

Expect normal service to resume between 2am and 2:30am Pacific Time.
As a result of these upgrades, expect to see some new and exciting features within the next few weeks.

Mafia Wars Community,

A great number of players have contacted us over the past few days reporting problems with the game and as the developers, we want to take some time out to address your concerns. First off, our sincere apologies for not sharing anything with you sooner. We have been so focused on trying to fix the problems that we haven't taken any time out to speak up and let you know we've been hard at work attempting to address all of your concerns.

Now, here is our list of major problems and what we're doing to fix them.

1. Pages don't load/Refresh wheel is appearing constantly.

This is the result of the game becoming much more popular in the past couple weeks than we were able to predict coupled with some of the changes that Facebook is making to the platform. We are upgrading our servers as fast as we can to improve the performance of the app. Our team has been and will continue to work 7 days a week to solve this problem for our players.

2. Various rewards not showing up/Timers not displaying correctly.

Some rewards, especially those involving timers, require a page refresh to appear properly. The game is designed to minimize page refreshes in order to allow so many people to play simultaneously. Simply click a couple of tabs and the timers should adjust.

3. Players who cheat to get on the Top Families.

We are aware of such cheating and are taking appropriate actions to ban these players from the game as outlined in our Terms of Service. Going forward, to better facilitate communication between us and all of you, we will be putting up our own privately run forums. By running our own forums, we will be able to better moderate them which means less spam and more answers to your questions. Look for these in the next few weeks. Again, we would like to offer our apologies for the recent string of problems and reinforce that we are doing everything we can to increase the quality of the game.
